Harold Pearl Sheldon papers, 1920-1950.

The papers of Colonel Harold Pearl Sheldon, 1880-1951, self described sportsman-enthusiast, consist primarily of personal correspondence and partial and complete drafts of stories on hunting, guns, and wildlife. The first series contains biographical material and assorted personal items. Also included in the collection are two different versions of a biography of Sheldon by his friend, P.P. Pitkin of Montpelier, entitled "Square Peg, Square Hole." The second series includes personal and official correspondence relating to his positions in the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey and Fish and Wildlife Service, 1926-1940. A folder labelled "Mercer, Birsch & Capps Incident" relates to a murder trial involving federal fish and game employees and illegal duck hunters in 1927. The series also contains letters to publishers and gun manufacturers. The third series contains drawings for "Frontier Stories," gun information, publications by W.L. McAtlee and C.T. Davis, and various other materials. There are three anti-communist, anti-Jewish items from the Washington, D.C. area, an unsigned letter about Middlebury politics and (Henry A.?) Wallace, a page of a diary from 1922, and a lock of hair from Chief Wahonto of the Chickasaw Nation. The fourth series, contains articles from Sheldon's regular series "Guns and Game" and "Shooting." It also contains articles, complete and incomplete, titled and untitled, and in typescript and handwritten.

Harold Pearl Sheldon was born in Fair Haven, Vermont, on November 13, l888. He joined the U.S. Army in 1910 and served in World War I in Europe. He was commandant at Fort Ethan Allen until 1919. He became Vermont Commissioner of Fish and Game in 1921 and served in that post until 1926 when he was named Chief U.S. Game Warden with the Bureau of Biological Survey. Perley P. Pitkin of Montpelier, Vt., was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Quartermaster for the 2nd Vermont Regiment on June 6, 1861.
